NSW Opportunity Class (OC) Practice Tests for Year 5 Entry

The NSW Opportunity Class Placement Test is a computer-based test used as part of the placement process for Year 5 entry into NSW opportunity classes. It assesses Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills, with each section contributing equally to the test result.

Parents and carers usually apply when their child is at the end of Year 3 or beginning of Year 4. Students generally sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test in Year 4 for entry into Year 5. Application dates change each year, so check the NSW Department of Education website for current dates.

The NSW Opportunity Class Placement Test is held in May. Students are allocated to sit the test on one test day. Exact dates may change each year, so parents and carers should check the NSW Department of Education’s official key dates for the relevant entry year.

Students are allocated to a test centre based on the location of the primary school they attend. Most test centres are located at local NSW public high schools.

There is no required date to start preparing for the Opportunity Class Placement Test. Students generally sit the test in Year 4 for entry to an opportunity class in Year 5.
The NSW Department of Education provides practice tests to help students become familiar with the computer-based test format, question types and test procedures.

Opportunity Class schools in New South Wales (NSW) are designed to cater to the educational needs of high-potential and gifted students. Like all New South Wales public schools, OC schools provide access to a broad range of extra-curricular groups and activities, contributing to a well-rounded education.

There are 89 opportunity classes in NSW, including classes in 88 public primary schools and the online opportunity class provided by Aurora College for eligible rural and remote students.

The Opportunity Class Placement Test Structure comprises of three parts:

Reading (14 Questions | 33 Answers | 40 Minutes)
Mathematical Reasoning (35 Multiple-choice Questions | 40 Minutes ) and
Thinking Skills (30 Multiple-choice Questions | 30 Minutes).

The NSW Department of Education does not classify the Opportunity Class (OC) Placement Test as easy or difficult. The test is designed to assess a student’s intellectual abilities across three sections: Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills.

The NSW Opportunity Class Thinking Skills Test has 30 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 30 minutes, and no previous knowledge is required.
