Frequently Asked Questions

01. Common Questions

What is the ASET/GATE Test?

The ASET Test is a measure for students academic merit and critical thinking abilities. Schools with GATE Program offer an extra challenge for academically gifted children and provide an environment with similarly talented students. To achieve placement in these schools, a highly competitive exam is held every year in March.

The test consists of 3 multiple choice tests (Reading Comprehension,  Quantitative Reasoning and Abstract Reasoning) and a Writing task which would consist of a stimulus (either creative, informative or persuasive).

How many total vacancies are available for the Year 7 intake in the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program?

There are more than 750 vacancies in Year 7 Gifted and Talented Secondary Education Programs across Western Australia. Perth Modern School has 225 vacancies forYear 7.  Most of the other participating schools have a minimum of 32 vacancies for Year 7 placement.

What is the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program selection process?

Students are selected for entry into the high school Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program ONLY through Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) conducted by ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) in March. The minimum total standard score for entry to GATE Program is 210. The academic placement is based on the ASET test score and the interview.

An applicant may choose a maximum of three (3) preferences for Gifted and Talented programs.

Note:
Your child can sit for Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) only once for any intake. If they take Year 7 entry and fail, there's no possibility of retaking the test in Year7.

What is the minimum entry score for placement in the GATE program?

The minimum total standard score (TSS) or benchmark score for entry to GATE Program is 210, and below this score, the applicant will not be considered for admission to GATE Program. Each school entry score is different and can change due to changes in the ASET test and stiff competition for placement. Only one-third of the top students are eligible for consideration for academic placement.

There are various factors involved in the GATE Program placement:
- Your child's raw marks in reading comprehension, quantitative reasoning, abstract reasoning, and writing
- Minimum and the maximum score achieved by any applicant in each of the four components of the ASET test
- Moderation and scaling of marks to calculate the total standard score
- Number of candidates applying for a particular school and Interview     score

02. Why go to a School with GATE Program?

What are the benefits of sending my child to a school with GATE Program?

The benefit of sending your child to a school with GATE Program is that it provides a unique and stimulating academic experience. It achieves this through having children with a similar academic ability in an academically enriching environment.

This could include providing more challenging content for students to develop their skills and faster-paced learning processes, so your child remains intellectually stimulated.

Selective schools often have a higher percentage of Band 6 (top band) marks in the Higher School Certificate and higher ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) to determine university entry.

How many schools participate in the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program?

The program is offered at 24 select public secondary schools in Western Australia, including a fully selective academic school, an arts college, two regional schools and an online program.

What is the purpose of NotesEdu Online Tests?

NotesEdu's online tests challenge students' academic ability and intends to measure the level of knowledge gained in a particular concept. From this information, we empower students, parents and teachers to discover area for further improvement.

How do NotesEdu test results help parents?

NotesEdu test results provide valuable information to the parent about their child's performance and enables them in identifying the subject areas their child needs improvement.

Will NotesEdu practice tests improve my child's test scores?

Besides talent, the intense practise for an extended period makes a person an expert in their field. The differences in performance between top students and average marks is due to a notion known as "deliberate practice".

A student needs to be motivated to improve their performance and continuously put an effort to become better. Use your pre-existing knowledge and review your performance to know what went wrong and what needs improvement.

There are three reliable ways to improve your child's test scores:
1. Genuine improvements in the subject knowledge to improve your abilities.

2. Decrease anxiety, increased familiarity with format, and time management.

3. Practice tests that increase familiar with what to expect in the tests, for example, questions types, and test format. Taking practice tests under time constraints similar to the live testing situation will best prepare the student for test-taking conditions and hence lower stress on exam-day.

The practice may not make you perfect, but it will certainly improve your abilities.

How does NotesEdu support students to make them exam ready?

We offer a range of time-bound tests that familiarises the students with the test format and questions types. NotesEdu's subscription offers unlimited access to a large bank of multiple-choice questions formatted similar to the GATE - ASET Test. We incorporate the exam-style questions that a student needs to build an in-depth knowledge for gaining a placement into their school of choice.

NotesEdu online tests will help you to identify your child current knowledge in reading, quantitative reasoning and abstract reasoning and their capabilities for the examination. It also provides you with the opportunity to develop a baseline to work from and develop your child academic journey plan for consistently testing their knowledge and further developing their skills. The child ASET examination is a family journey where you and your child can enjoy by being with each other until your child has taken the test.

I am disappointed with my score. What should I do?

If you are disappointed with your score, please do not give up or get sad about it.

It is usual for a score to fluctuate and differ between tests. Various factors may impact your performance, for example, your knowledge about the concept, concentration level, review of answers or even luck with guessing.

Take the low score as an opportunity to improve further. Focus on what you can do about it. After finishing NotesEdu's practice tests, review all questions to check what went wrong and how can you improve next time.

Remember: Hard work beats talent, when talent fails to work hard.
