What is NAPLAN?

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program— Literacy and Numeracy) is an annual national assessment for Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It assesses reading, writing, conventions of language, including spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy.

NAPLAN results provide information about students' literacy and numeracy achievement and progress. NAPLAN is not a pass-or-fail test and forms one part of the broader assessment information used by schools and teachers.

NAPLAN 2027 will be held from 10 to 22 March 2027 for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia. Schools schedule the individual tests within the national testing window.

How Can NotesEdu Support NAPLAN Preparation?

1. Practise NAPLAN-style questions across reading, numeracy, conventions of language and writing.

2. Become familiar with test formats and time limits through online practice tests.

3. Review detailed answer explanations to understand questions, concepts and how answers are worked out.

4. Use practice-test reports to identify areas for further learning and focus future practice where it may be most useful.

NAPLAN Test Structure

Students read informative, imaginative and persuasive texts and answer related questions.

Students apply mathematical knowledge and skills across number, algebra, measurement, space, statistics and probability.

Students are assessed on spelling, grammar and punctuation.

The NAPLAN Writing test asks students to respond to a writing prompt by producing either a narrative or persuasive text. The text type is revealed on the day of the assessment. Students in Years 3 and 5 receive prompts designed for their year levels, while Years 7 and 9 receive different prompts. Students may also receive different prompts depending on the day they complete the test.
